How to Write a Nursing paper?
Introduction and Background
The first part of a nursing paper, as with any academic writing, is the introduction. This section should be approximately 30-50 words. It will start with one or two sentences clearly explaining what your subject matter is going to be about.
In some cases, you may want to use a quote from an expert as a way of introducing your topic. If this is not possible, then you can always use phrases such as “In my opinion” or “According to experts” in order to introduce your work.
The following paragraph(s), although slightly longer than the previous ones, should re-emphasize the same idea by providing more information on it.
Some students have been known to mostly copy/paste from their findings during research, while others start writing paragraphs that are too long. There is no hard and fast rule on how to write your introduction, just be sure that by the end of it your readers will understand why they should read your paper.
After having explained in detail what you plan to talk about, go ahead and give us the bottom line – this is your thesis statement. It will be used later on so try not to forget about it. Write one or two sentences keeping in mind that they must be different from the ones you used in the introductory part. Do not copy them word for word. Here’s an example:
“There are several reasons for which I believe …”
Remember that quality writing does not necessarily mean complicated sentences. Your thesis statement should be easy to understand, yet it should have a strong impact on your readers. Think of it as the beginning of a sales pitch – you need to convince people that they want to read your work and that they will benefit from doing so!
After having written the introduction and the thesis, do not forget to insert body paragraphs into your text. Each one must be focused on helping you prove your point or provide evidence for why it is true (or false).
When writing about each paragraph, start with a general idea and then try changing/re-phrasing it in order to make it different from the others. As an example, if we were discussing how higher nurse-to-patient ratios have a positive impact on patient outcomes.
Our first body paragraph could discuss the importance of nurses and their role in hospitals. In the second paragraph, we could provide evidence that supports the idea that higher nurse-to-patient ratios improve patient outcomes. Finally, in the third paragraph, we could talk about how this improvement can be measured.
Remember that your goal is to keep the readers engaged and make sure that they are following your line of reasoning. You can do so by providing clear and concise information, as well as using strong evidence to back up your points. Additionally, make sure to avoid inserting personal opinions into your work – save them for the conclusion!
The conclusion is the last part of your paper. It should be about 3-5 paragraphs long and must summarize the main point of your work, or at least give readers a clear idea of what they should take away from it. Your goal is to leave them with a final impression that will make them think and maybe even remember you and/or your topic in the future.
Remember that this part is not an appropriate time for you to discuss why you believe something – we already know! Instead, try putting yourself in your reader’s shoes and imagine how they would feel if they got everything (evidence) presented throughout the rest of your work. You want them to walk away feeling as if they have learned something new; as if they know more than before you started writing.
You can also use the conclusion to talk about what your next step would be. What do you plan on doing with your information in order to make a change? How will it affect people in the future? Maybe you could discuss how readers might benefit from adopting your new idea or how they can avoid making similar mistakes in their own careers.
Citation and Reference List
Last but not least, do not forget to finish your work with a reference list and appropriate citations! Remember that this is where you let us know where all of the evidence comes from – we need to know who has been studying this topic for so long and we want them specifically. Give credit where credit is due, and do not try to pass off someone else’s work as your own.
Other Elements to Consider in order to get a high grade in Your Nursing paper
- Grammar and Mechanics: Make sure to have a strong understanding of grammar and mechanics rules before you start writing. A paper with poor grammar and punctuation will not be graded as highly as one that is error-free.
- Organization: Your paper should be well-organized and easy to follow. Remember to use clear headings and subheadings in order to help the reader move through your text more easily.
- Style: Nursing papers should be written in a formal, academic style. Use strong verbs, avoid contractions, and always double-check your spelling and grammar.
